As her patient eyes were lifted to his face, he saw suddendoubt and then amazement.
“Are you dying for him? ” she whispered.
“And his wife and child. Hush! Yes.”
“Oh, will you let me hold your brave hand, stranger? ”
“Hush! Yes, my poor sister; to the last.”
At that same hour a coach going out of Paris drove up to thebarrier to be examined. Jarvis Lorry handed out their papers to be read andanswered the official's questions.
“You can depart. A good journey! ”
“I salute you, citizen, ” said Mr. Lorry.
“Are we not going too slowly? ” asked Lucie, clinging to herold friend.
“I must not urge them too much. It would spark suspicion.”
The wind rushed after them. The clouds flew after them. Butthey were pursued by nothing else.
Madame Defarge took herself along the streets toward thedoctor's lodging. Under her robe she had hidden a pistol at her chest and adagger at her waist. She planned to catch Lucie grieving for her husband.
Only Miss Pross and Jerry Cruncher remained at the lodging, preparing to leave the city in a fast carriage. Miss Pross worried aboutawaking suspicion by having two vehicles leaving from the courtyard so closetogether.
“Cruncher, go stop the horses and carriage from coming here.Take me in by the cathedral door instead.”
“I am doubtful about leaving you, ” said Cruncher.
“Have no fear for me. Be at the cathedral at three o'clock.Bless you, Cruncher! ”
Cruncher went out and Miss Pross set about getting ready toleave. She paused to look about the room and cried out, for she saw a figurestanding in the shadows.
