Section A
Questions 1 and 2 will be based on the following news item.
There has been a call for an international ban on the development of fullyautonomous
weapon systems or killer robots which could hunt down their targets without the need for a human
operator. A report by Human Rights Watch and the Harvard Law School says military robots of
this kind could become reality within 30 years. Stewart Hughes reports.
Semi-autonomous weapons such as unmanned planes already allow pilots to fire missiles
from thousands of miles away. But the report argues that’s just the start of efforts to distance
military personnel from their targets. It says within the 20-30 years, fully-autonomous weapon
systems could be developed, capable of delivering lethal force with no human input at all. Human
Rights Watch says such weapons, which it terms “killer robots”, would be unable to apply human
judgment and will be incapable of complying with humanitarian law. It wants them banned
before they become a reality.
1. What is the news report mainly about?
2. How long would it take to develop fully autonomous weapon systems?
Questions 3 and 4 will be based on the following news item.
Latest figures in the United States show many more jobs were created last month than
forecast 170,000 although the unemployment rate was slightlyhigher. Both the Obama and
Romney presidential campaign seized on the numbers as they campaigned hard in the swing states.
Mark Mardell reports from Ohio.
It's just four more days until the election from the Ohio crowd shouted out the support to a
newly energized president. He said he wouldn't rest until every American who wanted a job had
one, and that today's better than expected figures, 171,000 new jobs created in October was the
most for eight months. But Mitt Romney in Wisconsin, one another swing states said the slight
rise in unemployment to 7.9% show the economy hadn’t make any progress. He would put
America on a better course. The figures themselves are unsurprising, but in a race this tight,
anything that could sway, just a few votes may really matter.
3. How many new jobs were created in October?
4. What are the two swing states in the presidential campaign?
Questions 5 to 7 will be based on the following news item.
This is Bob Smith from Channel 13 News.

Susan O'Connor, when she had returned and noticed the fire, she panicked, realizing that her
3-month-old baby was still inside. However, witnesses report seeing the dog, uh, the family dog,
pulling the baby to safety by, uh, the baby's clothes. Fortunately, everyone is reported fine. The

Conversation One
W: Hello, David. This is Mary Henderson. Sorry to bother you, but I'm having a small problem I
thought you might be able to help me with.
M: Sure, Mary. What's up?
W: Well, you know Sarah and I moved into an off-campus apartment in the fall. The dishwasher
broke down, so we reported it to Ms. Connors, the owner. She said she'd take care of it, but a
month went by and nothing happened.
M: Did you get back in touch with her?
W: I got a repairperson to give me an estimate, and then I sent it to her. When I didn't hear from
her, I had the repair done. And I deducted the cost from the rent check.
M: So what's the problem?
W: She called here. Very Angry. She said she could have gotten the repair done for less money.
Now, she's threatening to force us to leave for not paying the full rent.
M: Hold on, Mary. It does sound pretty serious. But I'm sure you can all sit down and work this
out.
W: Well, you're over at the law school. So, I wondered if you would mind coming with Sarah and
me when we go to talk with Ms. Connors. We're supposed to meet with her tomorrow night at
eight.
M: Sure. I'll be glad to help you straighten things out. Why don't I stop by about 7:30?
W: Thanks, David. You are our lifesaver.

M: Well it’s not over yet.
W: Yeah, but it’s over for me. I have to go back home and be there when the kids get home.
M: Oh, that’s right. I have to go back to the office. My lawyer is waiting there to talk about a
contract dispute we have with one of our clients. How long does it usually take you to get
home from here?
W: It depends on traffic. Sometimes I can get home within half an hour. I should be home today
around 5 p.m.
M: It’s so convenient that your office is close to the fourth ring road. I sometimes have to fight
traffic for an hour just to get to the third ring.
W: I know. Hey, will you get home tonight in time to watch “That’s Incredible!”?
M: I hope so. That’s my favorite program. I love all those weird things people do.
W: I’ll be watching it too. Well, if your meeting goes too late, give me a call and I’ll record it.
M: Thanks. I may do that. I might have to miss it tonight if my boss decides on our business trip to
Shanghai tomorrow. Then I’ll have to stay later to get ready.
W: Oh, I hate going to Shanghai.

Section C
Passage One
In 1871 the first passenger elevators were used in office buildings and allowed architects to
build higher than people could comfortably walk. Another innovation was in building technique.
9In 1885 the steel skeleton was introduced and allowed for the construction of tall buildings that
could withstand high winds. We take for granted some of the other inventions that enabled people
to live and work in skyscrapers. For example, few people realized that the telephone was
necessary for vertical communication and that flush toilet and vacuum incinerator made waste
disposal possible. Now as we entered the age of super skyscraper, some with more than 200 floors,
we see the need for even more technological innovations. In the area of heating and cooling
systems for example. For all their benefits, these super tall buildings do cause problems though.
For one thing they place enormous strain on parking and traffic row in urban areas. But let's leave
behind these technical concerns and move on to consider some of the design elements that have
come to characterize the age of the skyscraper.
Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.
16. What does the professor mainly discuss?
17. What does the professor say about the invention of the elevator?
18. What will the professor probably discuss next?
Passage Two
A question often put to the specialist on fishes is “How long do fishes live?” This puts the
specialist in an embarrassing position because he is often unable to give a direct answer to this
simple question. But actually this question is not as simple as it seems. There are thousands of
different kinds of fishes, and they vary a great deal in size and life span. It is not easy to find out
just how long a fish live in its natural state.
We can find out how old a fish is by studying its scales, but we cannot say how long more it
would have lived if we had not caught it. We may rear fishes and record their life span but we
cannot be sure this is the length of time they would have lived had they been left alone. We may
make markings to show how fast the fishes grow so that we can calculate the age of the largest on
record, but unless this large fish dies of old age we are still not in a position to know its natural
span.
Unlike human beings, fishes do not stop growing when they are fully grown. They continue
to grow as long as they live, although the rate of growth shows down in grown-up fishes.
Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.
19. What is the question people often ask the specialist on fishes?
20. Why does the question embarrass the specialist?
21. What happens to adult fishes?
Passage Three
The family is changing. In the past, grandparents, parents, and children used to live together;
in other words, they had an “extended family.” Sometimes two or more brothers with their wives
and children were part of this large family group. But family structure is changing throughout the
world. The “nuclear family” consists of only one father, one mother, and children; it is becoming
the main family structure everywhere.
10The nuclear family offers married women some advantages. They have freedom from their
relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Family structure in most parts
of the world is still “patriarchal;” that is, the father is the head of the family and makes most of the
important decisions. Studies show, however, that in nuclear families, men and women usually
make an equal number of decisions about family life. Also, well-educated husbands and wives
often prefer to share the power.
But wives usually have to “pay” for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived
in extended families, sisters, grandmothers, and aunts helped one another with housework and
childcare. In addition, older women in a large family group had important positions. Wives in
nuclear families do not enjoy this benefit, and they have another disadvantage too: Women
generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live
alone.
Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In most
parts of the world today, women work because the family needs more money. However, their
outside jobs often give them less freedom, not more, because they still have to do most of the
housework. The women actually have two full-time jobs─one outside the home and another
inside─and not much free time.
Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.
22. Who used to live together in an extended family?
23. What advantages does nuclear family offer to women?
24. What are some disadvantages of the nuclear family for women?
25. Why are many women dissatisfied with marriage and the nuclear family?
