Tim Berners-Lee, credited with inventing the technology behind the world wide web, sounded the alarm about three existential threats to it in an open letter published to celebrate the web’s 28th birthday. Sir Tim said that a loss of control over personal data had a “chilling effect on free speech” and warned of the dangers to democracy of fake news and unregulated political advertising.
