Story 8 How the Leopard GOT his Spots

【本章大意】

It is a long time ago, in the High Veldt, and all the animals are asimilar colour.

It is difficult to see the zebra and the giraffe…

很久很久以前，非洲高原上所有动物身体的颜色都差不多。

很难识别出斑马和长颈鹿……

… but the leopard is exactly the same colour as the High Veldt -he's almost invisible…

Can I smell a predator?

Do I hear a noise?

… and he loves to surprise the other animals!

但是，豹子身体的颜色与高原颜色完全一样，其他动物几乎都觉察不到他的存在……

斑马：我好像闻到附近有捕食者。

Sometimes the leopard hunts with an Ethiopian.

Look! There they are again.

I'm tired of all these surprises!

The zebra and the giraffe decide to leave the High Veldt.

Eventually, they arrive at a great forest full of green trees andbushes.

The colours here are nicer than the High Veldt!

It's nice and cool too.

The forest is full of strange and wonderful shadows… they fall onthe animals. After some time they don't go away.

Look! Now I have beautiful markings on my skin!

And I have stupendous stripes! Ha, Ha! We can hide from that nastyleopard now!

有时，豹子与一个埃塞俄比亚人一起打猎。

长颈鹿：瞧，他们又来了。

斑马：我厌烦了这些偷袭！

斑马和长颈鹿决定离开这片高原。

Baviaan the Wise Baboon arrives.

Oh Wise Baviaan, where are the animals that we like to eat?

They're in another spot. I suggest that you look for other spots,too!

The hunters find the forest, but they can't find the animals…

What is this place, so dark but full of patches of light?

I don't know. It must be 'the other spot' Baviaan talks about.

I can smell Giraffe, I can hear Giraffe, but I can't see Giraffe…

And I can smell Zebra, I can hear Zebra, but I can't see Zebra…

Why can't we see our favourite snacks? Normally, a giraffe in a darkplace is like a banana on a coconut tree…

I know they're here somewhere. Let's wait until night-time.
