前情提要 

多萝西很疑惑，自己怎么会杀人呢？原来，她的房子掉下来的时候把坏女巫给杀死了。老婆婆是一个好女巫，她告诉多萝西，如果她想回家，就去找住在绿宝石城的奥兹魔法师帮忙，并给了多萝西一个吻来保护她。于是多萝西穿上坏女巫留下的红鞋子，沿着通往绿宝石城的黄砖路去找魔法师去了……

绿野仙踪 L3

Dorothy and Toto walked along the yellow brick road for a long time. When they were tired, they stopped in a field by the road.(1) Not far away, there was a scarecrow, and Dorothy and Toto walked across to look at it.

多萝西和托托沿着黄砖路走了很久。累了，她们便停在路边的一片稻田里。不远处有一个稻草人。多萝西和托托穿过田地去看它。

'Good day,' said the Scarecrow.

“你好啊。”稻草人说。

'Oh!' said Dorothy. 'You can speak!'

 “哦!”多萝西惊叫，“你居然会说话!”

'Of course I can speak,' said the Scarecrow. 'But I can't move, up here on this pole… I'd like to get down. Can you help me?'

“我当然会说话了，”稻草人回答道，“不过我不会动，只能待在这根杆上……我想下来。你能帮我一下吗？”

Carefully, Dorothy took the Scarecrow off his pole.

多萝西小心翼翼地将稻草人从杆上取下来。

'Thank you very much,' said the Scarecrow. He moved his arms and legs, and straw went everywhere.(2) 'Who are you?' he asked. 'And where are you going?'

“非常感谢。”稻草人说。他动动胳膊，又动动腿，稻草掉了一地。“你是谁？”他问道，“到哪里去？”

'I'm Dorothy, and I'm going to the Emerald City. I want to go home to Kansas, but I don't know the way. I'm going to ask the Wizard of Oz for help.'

“我是多萝西，要去绿宝石城。我想回家乡堪萨斯，但不知该怎么走，所以我得去找奥兹魔法师帮忙。”

'Where is the Emerald City?' asked the Scarecrow. 'And who is the Wizard of Oz? I don't know anything, you see, because I have no brains in my head—only straw.’

“绿宝石城在哪里？”稻草人问，“奥兹魔法师又是谁?你瞧，我什么都不知道，因为我的脑袋里没有大脑——只有稻草。”

'Oh dear!' said Dorothy. 'I'm very sorry.'

“哦，天哪！”多萝西回答，“太遗憾了。”

'I would very much like to have some brains,' the Scarecrow said.(3) 'Can I go to the Emerald City with you? Perhaps the Wizard of Oz can give me some brains. What do you think?’(4)

“我很想长点脑子，”稻草人说，“我能和你一起去绿宝石城吗?或许奥兹魔法师能给我点脑子。你觉得怎么样？”

'I don't know,' said Dorothy. 'But yes, please come with me. He's a famous wizard, so perhaps he can help you.' She felt very sorry for the Scarecrow.(5) 'Don't be afraid of Toto,' she said. 'He never hurts people.'

“我也不知道。”多萝西回答道，“好的，你和我们一起去吧。他是个伟大的魔法师，或许可以帮你。＂她十分同情稻草人。“别怕托托，”她说，“他从不伤人。”
