At $3.6bn, Facebook’s fourth-quarter profit was more than twice that of the year before, though an accounting-rule change was responsible for almost $1bn of that. 

It lost a $500m lawsuit brought by ZeniMax, which accused Facebook’s Oculus of stealing virtual-reality technology.

In its largest-ever deal, Microsoft bought LinkedIn, an ailing professional-networking and job-hunting site, for $26.2 billion. 

Shares in the software giant dipped 3% on the news; LinkedIn’s stock soared by 47%. 

It has 100m active monthly users but has seen its share price slump amid worries that companies are cutting back on recruitment costs.

Stefan Larsson, chief executive of Ralph Lauren, said he would step down. 

Mr Larsson, who has been at the luxury fashion brand less than two years, led a campaign of cutting jobs and costs. 

He said that although he and the eponymous founder “worked hard to find common ground” on the creative direction of the business, they did not find it.
