It’s about half midnight, I’m at Childline’s London base, at a night shift. They often answer high-risk calls overnight, and at this particular shift, we have five amazing counsellors with two supervisors.
They’re going to be contacted over the next handful of hours into the middle of the night by young people and children either on the phone or via IChat or email. So I’m going to go in and meet the counsellors, have a listen in, and yeah, this is what Childline does, this is the coalface of what they do.
The calls that have come in tonight to be quite honest have just really sideswiped me. Within the first 25 minutes, there were two active suicide calls and the counsellors were helping them, work through these reoccurring thoughts that were still haunting them.
And there was also a case were a young person was literally as we speak now, waiting for the emergency services to arrive, because they had overdosed.
There was a lovely young girl that had been raped recently, and the huge emotional ramifications of that. She felt that the only place that she could call was Childline, at 2:30 in the morning. I’m just a bit emotional because there’s an awful lot of pain out there.
It’s quarter past four in the morning. So even though I’m going to bed and some of the counsellors in there have finished their shift, obviously there’s going to be more people clocking in. Not enough people in our country are reminded of how incredible this service is.
I feel like all the young people that have come away from being in contact with Childline tonight, they’ve taken something that helps them step forward even if it’s just the tiniest amount.
It’s so invaluable, this service that Childline provides to the life and mental health of these young people and there is no one else plugging that gap. I think it’s an amazing service, I thought it was an amazing service before and now I know it is.
