英文版小王子精读讲解 Chapter 2 Part 4

作者掏出纸笔，想满足小王子的要求，但是却想起来自己根本没学过画画，于是只能推辞，那么小王子是如何回复的呢？

He answered me: “That doesn’t matter. Draw me a sheep. .. ”

面对我的推辞，小王子回答说：“没有关系，给我画一只羊吧！” That doesn’t matter 意思就是“没关系”，这是一个很常用的口语表达。

But I had never drawn a sheep. So I drew for him one ofthe two pictures I had drawn so often. It was that of the boa constrictor from the outside.

但是，我从来没有画过羊，所以我就给他了我之前经常画的两幅画其中的一个,也就是那幅从外面看上去的蟒蛇，boa constrictor from the outside, 我们在第一章也了解过，那是作者的 Drawing Number One, 画的是一只蟒蛇吞掉了一头大象，不过大人们都把它当成一顶帽子。那么小王子看到我的画以后会有什么反应呢？

And I was astounded to hear the little fellow greet it with,

“No, no, no! I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor. A boa constrictor is a very dangerous creature, and an elephant is very cumbersome. Where I live, everything is very small. What I need is a sheep. Draw me a sheep.”

我惊奇地听到这个小家伙说到：“不，不，不！我不要肚子里有一只大象的蟒蛇。蟒蛇是很危险的动物，大象很笨拙。在我住的地方，所有的东西都很小，我想要的就是一只羊。给我画一只羊。” astounded 意思是“震惊的”。这里的 fellow,意思类似于前面的 chap，也就是“家伙”、“伙计”。另外还有一个词 cumbersome，它的意思是 “笨拙的”、“碍事的”。让作者感到惊奇的是，这个小家伙能看出自己画的不是一顶帽子，而是一只蟒蛇；不过更惊奇的是，他还能看出来蟒蛇肚子里有一头大象。看来这个小王子真是不简单。与此同时，我们从小王子给出的解释中也顺带了解了一点有关他的信息。注意这一句：Where I live ，everything is very small. “在我住的地方，所有的东西都很小。”

So then I made a drawing.

He looked at it carefully, then he said: “No. This sheep is already very sickly. Make me another.”

于是我又画了一幅。他仔细地看着这幅画，然后说：“不，这只羊已经病得很重了。给我重新画一只。” 这回，作者倒是画了一只羊，可是小王子不满意，因为他能看出来这只羊生病了。需要注意到是，sickly 这个词是形容词而不是副词，sickly 和 sick 意思大体上是一样的， 都是 “生病了” 的意思，如果说有什么区别的话，那就是 sickly 表达的是一种持续的或者经常的不健康的状态，而 sick 不一定是持续的。

So I made another drawing.

My friend smiled gently and indulgently.

“You see yourself,” he said, “that this is not a sheep.This is a ram. It has horns.”

所以我又画了一幅，这一次我的朋友轻柔而又温和地笑着说：“你自己看看，这不是 sheep (绵羊), 而是一只 ram（公羊），它有犄角。” 其实 sheep 是包含 ram 的；ram 特指的是成年的公绵羊，那么我想这里小王子想要的应该是一直母绵羊。ram 是长犄角的，犄角这个词，英文是 horn。

另外我还想特别探讨一下 indulgently 这个词，这个词在词典里的解释是“溺爱地”、“放任地”。但是放到这个句子里 My friend smiled gently and indulgently，就有点解释不通。 实际上这一句的法语原文是这么说的：Mon ami sourit gentiment, avec indulgence. 其中的 avec indulgence 相当于英文的 leniently 或者 benevolently，也就是“温和地”、“宽容地” 这个意思。

So then I did my drawing over once more.

But it was rejected too, just like the others.

“This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live along time.”

所以我又画了一个，不过这一次，就像前两次一样，我的画又被拒绝了。这一次小王子是这么说的： 这只太老了，我想要一只能活得长的。” 这里有个词 reject， 它的意思是 “拒绝”。But it was rejected too. 是一个被动语态，我们也可以把它变为主动句 But he rejected ittoo. 只不过这里作者并不特别强调是谁拒绝了这幅画，所以用了被动语态。
