We certainly will like to expect a very poor and old cottage but what might arise was a site that disgraced England.

我们无疑是希望看到破旧古老的小屋，但出现的可能是让英国人尴尬的一幕。

A door with no fastening but a piece of old rag. You enter a room so low you can hardly stand up right. The walls in some places just the bricks. In others, holes through which you can poke your hand.

没有扣紧只有一块旧破布遮挡的门，低矮到连人都直不起腰的房间。有的墙全由石头堆砌起来，墙上的洞有的大到手都可以伸进去。

Then it has the bedroom. How they can possibly sleep in it is quite beyond me. The floor is more earth than bricks and there is no glass in the window which is covered with sacking.

然后是卧室，我完全不懂他们怎么可能睡在里面。地上与其说是地砖不如说就是泥土，窗户上也没有玻璃，只是用麻布袋遮挡着。

And here we are, living in our comfortable houses and making such remarks as "Oh what a draft there is from that window. Do shut it".

而我们住在舒适的房子里，就会发出这样的感叹：“哦，外面风好大啊，把窗户关上吧。”
