“This Friday we’ll have the yearly Egg Drop Challenge(挑战),” said our science teacher, Mr. Baker.
“You can work alone or with a partner.” My friend, Cassie, and I smiled at each other. We always worked on projects(设计) 1.
The 2of the Challenge was simple— to build a projective container to keep an egg from breaking when rolled down the stadium wall.
I 3 my sandwich that afternoon while waiting for Cassie. As I was
spreading(涂抹) the butter-cream ,it gave me an idea.
“I  have  a  wonderful  design  for our    4 container!” I said when Cassie arrived. “We can mix the egg with some butter cream.”

“Why not put the egg in a basket with a parachute(降落伞) together?”
Cassie rolled her eyes. “The parachute is better than that stupid idea.”
I couldn’t believe it. Of course we’d had our little 5 in the past, but  she’d never called any of my ideas “ 6 ” before.
“Then I’ll build mine and you build yours! ”     7     words had been   out, our friendship was challenged.
When Friday finally arrived, I had to admit Cassie’s Egg Force One looked pretty good. Anyway , my Egg Cream didn’t look quite scientific. We kids carried our containers up three stadium steps and      8      them over the   side wall. Those whose eggs broke were out; those whose egg survived  turned around three more steps and dropped them again. This would go on till the last egg broke.
After four rounds, only Cassie and I were    9     . I let go of my box. I     heard someone say “ew” after seconds. Had my egg broken? I ran down the
10 . The sidewalk was dotted with egg shell( 蛋 壳 ) from  those  failed drops. Finally I found my little Egg Cream.
“That looks like egg drop soup, Laura,”Cassie said. She was holding her Egg Force  One. My 11 raced. Had she won? I looked at her basket. Empty ! “My egg bounced( 弹 ) 12 , ” she explained, pointing to a broken shell(壳).
“A tie(平局),” Mr Baker said.
Cassie looked at me, and her glare softened . I laughed. She smiled…(10 年密云一模)

Cloze 2

4 I asked, “What was that all about?”
“Nothing,” he said. “My teacher said we should   5   our parents that   we love them and see what they said. It’s an experiment.”
The next day I called his teacher to 6 out more about this

“experiment” and how the other parents had reacted (反应).
“Most of the fathers had the 7 reaction as you did,” the teacher
said. “When I first 8          we tried this, I asked the children what they
thought their parents would say. Some of them thought their parents would have heart trouble. What I’m trying to tell the 9 is feeling loved is an

important part of health, it is something all people need. A boy should be able to tell his dad he loves him.”

The teacher, a middle  -  aged  man,  understands  how  10 it is for some of us to say the things that would be good for us to say.

When my son came to me that evening, I 11 on to him for an extra second. And just before he pulled away, I said in my deepest, most manly voice, “Hey, I love you, too.”
I don’t know if  12  that made either of us healthier,  but it did feel  pretty good. Maybe next time one of my children said “I love you”, it would not take me a whole day to think of the right answer. (选自北京市顺义区 09 年中考一模完型填空)
