Leaders from nearly 200 nations signed an agreement to phase out hydro fluorocarbons, chemicals used in refrigeration and air conditioning. In the 1980s the Montreal Protocol replaced chlorofluorocarbons, which were known to harm the ozone layer, with HFCs—but they have since emerged as a contributor to climate change. Experts estimate the amendment to the protocol will avoid a half-degree rise in global temperatures.
