Do you know what these animals are? Frogs!

Frogs are amphibians: animals that spend their lives both in and out of water.

Like all amphibians, frogs begin their lives as eggs, packed together in wet clumps. They hatch into tadpoles with gills and tails. Just like fish, they can breathe underwater.

As they grow bigger, they develop lungs and legs for life on land. This is called metamorphosis.

There are over four thousand species of frog, in different sizes, shapes and colours. Their long legs help them jump over 20 times their height!

They can breathe and drink through their thin, moist skin. But it dries out easily if they don't stay close to water.

Toads are also amphibians. Their skin is drier than other frogs and they can stay on land for longer.

They can make themselves look really big if they feel they're in danger.

Some toads and frogs have special tricks to save themselves from predators – they release poison through their skin.

Newts and salamanders are also amphibians. They have thin bodies with long tails.

Some use camouflage to blend in with their surroundings – others have bright colours that scare off predators.

All amphibians are carnivores, feeding on small insects, spiders and snails.

Some have long tongues they can flick out to catch their prey.

Like reptiles, they are cold-blooded, which means their bodies have the same temperature as the air or water around them.
