What lives in ponds, rivers, seas and oceans? Fish!

Fish spend all their life in water. They swim and turn using their fins. They have long spines running through their bodies.

Fish breathe through little slits, called gills, taking oxygen from the water around them.

Most fish lay eggs. They can lay hundreds of eggs at the same time. Soon, they hatch into tiny baby fish, called fingerlings.

Fingerlings are easy prey for bigger fish, so they stay close together for protection.

Some fish have live babies, like sharks, the biggest of all fish. Sharks are top predators of the ocean, hunting for smaller fish. Their jaws fit several rows of teeth. If one tooth falls out, another one soon takes its place.

Some fish are good at hiding, camouflaged against rocks or lying flat on the seabed. If you live in a coral-reef, you need to be colourful to blend in! Like this clownfish, and these yellow-tailed snapper.

Some fish swim together in schools. They move as one, as if they're dancing.

Seahorses are fish too, but jellyfish are not!

Some fish eat tiny sea plants. Big fish eat smaller fish.

Fish are also prey to birds, and mammals, and humans love to fish: salmon, cod, tuna and sea bream.

Some fish are beautiful and we keep them at home as pets or on show at the aquarium.
