Having children will make you happier thanstaying childless, according to a new study, but not until later in life, whenthey have flown the nest. A team of researchers at Heidelberg University inGermany found that parents tend to be happier than non-parents in old age, butthis only holds if their kids have moved out. Scientists asked 55,000 peopleaged 50 and over from 16 European countries about their mental well-being, andresults suggest "the positive aspects of parenthood dominate when gettingolder." One of the biggest factors is that children become a form ofsocial support, and the researchers point out that social support networks areassociated with greater happiness and less loneliness and can act as a bufferagainst stressful events. However, children who still live at home are shown tohave a negative effect on well-being.

An early Renaissance masterpiece by theFlorentine master Giovanni Cimabue has been discovered in an old lady's kitchenin a town near Paris, art experts said Monday. "Christ Mocked", bythe 13th-century artist who taught Giotto di Bondone, is estimated to be worthbetween four and six million euros, according to the Old Masters specialistEric Turquin. The work was owned by an old lady in the northern French town ofCompiegne, who had it hanging between her kitchen and her sitting room. It wasdirectly above a hotplate for cooking food. The painting's elderly ownerthought it was just a rather old religious icon when she took it to her localauctioneers to be valued. It will now go under the hammer at an auction housein Senlis, north of Paris, on Oct 27.

Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva,confirmed as the new chief of the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday,said her "immediate priority" was to deal with risks of crises whilepursuing long-term goals. Georgieva, 66, who succeeds France's ChristineLagarde to begin her five-year term on Oct 1, is the first person from anemerging-market economy to lead the IMF since its inception in 1944, the fund'sexecutive board said in a statement. Georgieva said in a statement that it wasa "huge responsibility" to be at the helm of the IMF at a time whenglobal economic growth continues to disappoint, trade tensions persist, anddebt is at historically high levels. "Our immediate priority is to helpcountries minimize the risk of crises and be ready to cope with downturns. Yet,we should not lose sight of our long-term objective – to support soundmonetary, fiscal and structural policies to build stronger economies andimprove people's lives," Georgieva said.

今年31省份上调养老金

China's 31 provinces, autonomous regionsand municipalities confirmed they would increase their pensions this year.Tibet will raise its pension by 80 yuan per person per month, Guangdong andShanghai will raise theirs by 60 yuan, and Beijing by 50 yuan. Liaoningadjusted its pension increase by 5 grades based on the retiree's working years,with a maximum of 70 yuan and a minimum of 25. The enhancements are also basedon the retiree's pension payment years, or working years, and basic pensionlevel. Moreover, elderly retirees, business retirees, ex-servicemen, retireesin remote areas and retirees who left the workforce due to occupational injurywill enjoy preferential pension policies.

全国31个省、自治区、直辖市已证实今年将上调养老金。西藏每月每人将加发80元，广东、上海每人每月加发60元，北京每人每月加发50元。辽宁按照退休(职)人员工作年限将定额调整分为5档，最高70元，最低25元。此次上调还与退休人员缴费年限或工作年限、基本养老金水平挂钩。此外，高龄退休人员、企业退休人员、退役军人、边远地区退休人员以及因工伤离岗退休人员均可享受养老金优惠政策。
