1. rhyme and rhythm 韵律/押韵和节奏

rhyme 韵 如：

How nice this is a day

A girl would like to say

She's like a flower fair in May

That always tries her full display

这里的 day， say， may 和display属于押韵。

Rhythm 节奏

(注意：大写字母是重读音节，小写字母为轻读音节）

How NICE /this IS / a DAY (三音步）

A GIRL / would LIKE / to SAY （三音步）

She's LIKE / a FLO /wer FAIR / in MAY （四音步）

That AL /ways TRIES / her FULL / disPLAY （四音步）

前两行是轻重格三音步，后两行是轻重格四音步，这样构成了抑扬格的节奏。就像音乐中的两拍子。音乐的拍节，在诗歌中就是节奏。

2. I've been a fool

what a fool I've been=名词结构 我曾是一个什么样的傻瓜

(the falling rain is) telling me just + what a fool I've been （瓢泼大雨）在告诉我我曾是一个什么样的傻瓜

3. I wish 句式

wish 的用法：

表示与事实相反或不大可能实现的愿望——虚拟语气

　　(1) wish that sb did sth 希望某人现在做某事

　　例：I wish I were as strong as you.

　　我希望和你一样强壮。

　　(2) wish that sb had done sth 希望某人过去做某事

　　例： I wish you had told me earlier

　　要是你早点告诉我就好了。

　　(3) wish that sb would/could do sth 希望某人将来做某事

　　例：I wish you would succeed this time.

　　我希望你这次会成功。

I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain. 我真希望雨停下来，让我无望地哭泣。

4. do XX in vain 白费功夫做XX / 徒劳地做XX

Peter feels he is doing the job in vain. Peter觉得自己做的工作是徒劳无效的。
