Like an exhausted biathlete, the host of 2026's Winter Olympics will stagger to victory today at the International Olympic Committee's new headquarters in Lausanne. 

Only two of the original seven competitors remain: a joint Italian bid by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo is ahead of a Swedish one from Stockholm and Are. Would-be hosts are increasingly put off by the cost.

Beyond Olympic woes, winter sports face two longer-term worries: ageing populations and global warming.
