梅姨辞职演讲：我已尽我所能

Ever since I first stepped through the door behind me as Prime Minister, I have striven to make the United Kingdom a country that works not just for a privileged few, but for everyone, and to honour the result of the EU referendum.

自从我第一次作为首相跨进身后这道门，我就非常清楚，我的职责是使英国服务于每一个民众，而不止满足区区少数人的利益。尊重公投结果并予以落实。

Back in 2016, we gave the British people a choice. Against all predictions, the British people voted to leave the European Union. I feel as certain today as I did three years ago that in a democracy, if you give people a choice you have a duty to implement what they decide. I have done my best to do that.

2016年，我们把选择权交到了英国民众手中。尽管结果出人意料，但我们的民众选择离开欧盟。今天，我的信念跟三年前一样，在一个民主国家，只要你给了民众选择权，就有责任落实他们的决定。我已经倾尽全力了。

I negotiated the terms of our exit and a new relationship with our closest neighbours that protects our security and our union. I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. Sadly, I have not been able to do so. I tried three times. Ibelieve it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort.

我一直在谈判，力求达成最佳脱欧条款，维护与周边国家的新型合作关系，最大限度保障就业，国家安全和联盟团结。我倾尽全力，说服议员支持脱欧协议。遗憾的是，我还是没能成功说服他们。尽管我努力了三回，但我依然相信，坚持没有错。尽管长路漫漫，道阻且长。但此刻我很清楚，选举一位新首相继续完成这项事业，才是我们国家更好的选择。

So I am today announcing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7th of June so that successor can be chosen. I have agreed with the party chairman and the chairman of the 1922 committee that the process for electing a new leader should begin in the following week. I have kept Her Majesty the Queen fully informed for my intentions and I will continue to serve as her Prime Minister until the process has conclued.

所以今天我宣布，我将辞去保守党和民主统一党党首的职务，并将于6月7日离职，以选举新的首相。我同意保守党主席和1922年委员会主席的意见，新首相的选举程序将于下周开始。我已将此决定告知女王陛下，我仍将继续担任她的首相，直至新首相产生。
