Questions:

1.Accordingto the author, is there a unified theory?
2.Whyis it that the philosophers reduced the scope of their inquiries?
3.Accordingthe author, what is the ultimate triumph of human reason?

Evenif there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules andequations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes auniverse for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing amathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be auniverse for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the botherof existing? Is the unified theory so compelling that it brings about its ownexistence? Or does it need a creator, and, if so, does he have any other effecton the universe? And who created him?

Upto now, most scientists have been too occupied with the development of newtheories that describe what the universe is to ask the question why. On theother hand, the people whose business is to ask why, the philosophers, have notbeen able to keep up with the advance of scientific theories. In the eighteenthcentury, philosophers considered the whole of human knowledge, includingscience, to be their field and discussed questions such as: did the universehave a beginning? However, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, sciencebecame too technical and mathematical for the philosophers, or anyone elseexcept a few specialists. Philosophers reduced the scope of their inquiries somuch that Wittgenstein, the most famous philosopher of this century, said, “Thesole remaining task for philosophy is the analysis of language.” What acomedown from the great tradition of philosophy from Aristotle to Kant!

However,if we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable inbroad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in thediscussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If wefind the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason— forthen we would know the mind of God.

根据今天课程讲解翻译以下句子段落.

Whatis it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them todescribe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical modelcannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model todescribe.

是什么赋予这些方程式活力,是什么制造出一个宇宙,可以让方程式去描述?常见的建立一个数学模型的科学方法,也不能回答这个问题:为什么会存在这个可以让(数学)模型去描述的宇宙?
