Vogue cover sparks debate

Vogue's April issue features on its cover 14 female celebrities from around the world, including US actress Scarlett Johansson, French actress Lea Seydoux, Bae Doona from South Korea, and Chinese pop star Angelababy, or Yang Ying in Chinese.

Angelababy's landing on the American Vogue cover has shocked many. Some say she is not a suitable actress to represent China, because compared with the others on the cover Angelababy has not achieved much in the film industry.

"I think she is a symbol of online celebrity, not an actress," says a netizen. Vogue, launched in 1982 in the US, is considered the fashion industry's bible. Becoming a cover model for the magazine is tough work, even for the biggest stars.

FAA probed for plane approval

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is investigating the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its approval of Boeing 737 MAX, two of which have crashed.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the DOT is looking into whether the FAA used appropriate design standards and engineering analysis in certifying the anti-stall system, known as MCAS, which is suspected of playing a role in the recent crashes. An earlier report by the Seattle Times said analysis on the MCAS system, largely conducted by Boeing itself, was flawed.

The report identified several flaws with the assessment, including understating the power of the new flight control system, failing to account for how the system could reset itself each time a pilot responded, and assessing a failure of the system as one level below "catastrophic."

Inadequate sleep among kids

More than 60% of children and teens do not get adequate sleep, which can put their health at risk, according to a report released on Sunday by the Chinese Sleep Research Society, ahead of the World Sleep Day that falls on March 21.

Nearly 63% of Chinese youths ages 6 to 17 sleep less than eight hours a day, according to the report. Among 13- to 17-year-olds the figure is more than 81%. The report found that the heavy school homework load and the popularization of electronic devices were the two top causes for the inadequate sleep.

Experts suggested that local education authorities across China take more measures to help students get more sleep, including delaying the start of morning classes by a half-hour.

Young seek strangers' praise

A new trend - seeking praise from strangers - has gone viral on Chinese social media, especially among China's over-stressed young people. A number of chat groups have been formed that are designed to show kindness and support to members, the very opposite tone one often finds on social media platforms.

Often dubbed "flattery groups," or Kuakuaqun in Chinese, such online chatrooms have become a place for students to give compliments, look on the bright side of life and spread positivity. According to media reports, the online praising groups originated in 2014 on Douban, a social site.

Now universities across China have joined the trend by creating their own praising groups. In a chat group set up by students in Tongji University in Shanghai, the number of participants rocketed from 200 to 500 in less than 10 hours. The conversation kept going for a whole day. The chats reflected people's anxiety and provided a sort of psychological support, said a freshman from Tsinghua University.
