Today, I’ll introduce somethingabout social media.
Information andcommunication technology has changed rapidly over the past 20 years with thedevelopment of social media. For example, the development of mobile technologyhas played an important role in shaping the impact of social media. This putsthe means to connect anywhere, at any time on any device in everyone’s hands.
Almost a quarter ofthe world’spopulation is now on Facebook. In the USA nearly 80% of all Internet users areon this platform. Because social networks feed on interactions among people, they become more powerful as they grow.
Thanks to theInternet, each person with different views can see that he’s not alone. And whenthese people find one another via social media, they can do things—createpublications and entire online worlds that promote their world view, and thenbreak into the mainstream.
Without social media, social, environmental and political ills would be invisible. Increasedvisibility of issues has shifted the balance of power from the hands of a fewto the masses.
While social mediaactivism brings an increased awareness about societal issues, questions remainas to whether this awareness is translating into real change.
Some argue that socialsharing has encouraged people to use computers and mobile phones to expresstheir concerns on social issues without actually having to engage actively withcampaigns in real life. Their support is limited to pressing the“Like” buttonor sharing content.
