Chapter 34
Standing at the top of the stairs, Giselle took in (领会,此处指一眼看过去) the ball. For the first time since Giselle had arrived in this world, everyone else looked like they belonged in Andalasia, and she looked like she belonged here! It was a rather odd sensation (感觉). Taking a deep breath, she and Edward started down the staircase ... where Robert was waiting.
“I’m a little surprised to see you,” Robert said.
“I’m surprised, too.” Giselle smiled shyly. “You told me you couldn’t dance.”
“I said I didn’t,” Robert corrected (纠正). “I never said I couldn’t.”
From his place beside her, Edward cleared his throat.
“Oh, excuse me!” Giselle said, turning to Nancy. “This is Edward. He’s my ... prince.”
“And this is Nancy,” Robert said to Edward. “She’s my ...” But he wasn’t sure how to end that sentence.
“We’re together,” Nancy explained, hugging him.
“And this beautiful lady is Giselle,” Edward said gallantly (献殷勤地). “The love of my life, my intended (未婚妻), my heart’s true desire (真爱)!”
Nancy’s eyes widened. “Wow.”
“Is something wrong?” Edward asked.
Nancy shook her head, impressed (受感动的) . “Just the way you said that,” she said. “So straightforward (直截了当的) and unself-conscious (自然的). Not a hint (暗示) of irony (讽刺). It’s very... romantic.” She smiled.
“Well, thank you.” Edward gave her a small bow as the bandleader (乐队的领队) stepped to the microphone (麦克风).
“Well, folks,” the bandleader said. “It’s the time of the night we look forward to all year long. So in keeping with (按照) tradition (惯例), I’d like to ask each gentleman to turn to a lady he did not accompany (陪伴) this evening and invite her to dance the King and Queen’s Waltz (华尔兹舞).” The band struck up (开始演奏) a slow tune (曲调).
Edward bowed toward Nancy. “May I have the pleasure?” he asked.
Nancy glanced at Robert, who nodded. In a moment, she and Edward danced away.
Robert offered Giselle his arm. “Shall we?”
She gave him a small curtsy (屈膝礼).
As they danced into the middle of the room, Giselle looked into Robert’s eyes and felt her heart flutter (震动).
Robert leaned (倾斜) toward Giselle’s ear. Softly, he sang along with the bandleader, and Giselle felt herself relax (放松) into his arms, her head against his shoulder.
Above, clouds of golden confetti (五彩纸屑) fell down from the ceiling (天花板). It was like magic....
“Mind if I cut in (打断)?” asked a voice behind Giselle. Nancy was standing there, nodding at Robert.
The moment was shattered (破灭). Giselle stepped back. “No!” she said. “Of course.”
Nancy stepped into Robert’s arms.
Tears welled up in Giselle’s eyes, making Nancy and Robert look blurry (模糊的) as they twirled (旋转) away.
Edward took her hand, leading her up the stairs. “You’re sad?” he asked.
Giselle made herself smile at him. “Oh, no, I’m fine!” She had never told a lie (撒谎) before, but she just didn’t know how to tell him the truth. She wasn’t even sure what the truth was. That she loved Robert? How was that even possible? They were from different worlds!
