Resolving your annual resolutions

Resolving your annual resolutions

Did you notice the year 2018 has a mere 22 days left?
Now it's time to look back of the year and see how we are doing with our resolutions.
Have you become a better person than before? Have you achieved your goal or completed your to-do-list? Have you done what you promised yourself at the start of the year?
Your answers to these questions may not be 100 percent yes or 100 percent no. You may feel a bit frustrated and then agonize over what did you do this year or why didn't you discipline yourself to work hard.
Perhaps the following situations sound familiar to you.
You concentrate on your work for 15 minutes but then lose yourself in interesting and changing contents in social media or a digital game. Ten minutes later, you feel guilty for killing time that should be spent working, so you return to work anxiously. But the process of working usually does not last long before you are distracted by your phone again.
You thus become trapped in a vicious cycle of low-efficiency and anxiety.
Every time you fail to achieve your resolution, you promise yourself you will work much harder tomorrow.
Since you were a child, you have been taught, "Where there is a will, there is a way." It seems anything you want can be done with hard work and persistence.
But the conflict between conscious and unconscious in your brain can interfere with this process.
Conscious is a fact of awareness by the mind itself and the world. Freud compared the unconscious to a system made of 'representatives' of powerful bodily drives pushing for satisfaction. The unconscious works according to its laws and sometimes does things that seem totally irrational to conscious minds.
The conscious and unconscious can work together. For example, the conscious supports you to eat a lunch guided by rational thinking and the unconscious also suggests you to eat a lunch filled with wishful impulses.
But this is not always the case. When you are following your resolutions, the conscious and unconscious tend to differ.
The conscious believes you should stick to the resolutions, but the unconscious does not think so. If you plan to read a book every day, the unconscious may influence you to give up. As the unconscious does not have a free will, the conscious is dominant in most cases.

The conscious guides you to “keep calm and carry on”.
However, working in a state where the conscious and unconscious interfere with each other is energy-consuming. Even if you succeed in letting the conscious prevail, it also will take much energy to maintain this, and that’s why you feel exhausted. When you are tired, you may easily be influenced by the unconscious.
So, what do you do when you are in such a dilemma?
Ensure your conscious and unconscious do not conflict with each other, meaning that you should identify realistic resolutions and not make unrealistic ones.
Unrealistic resolutions refer to things that you may not achieve though you work hard, including making millions of yuan a year, keeping fit in the shortest time and getting a job promotion. For these resolutions, your unconscious may conflict with the conscious, when you do not get satisfaction and fulfillment.
Acknowledging that you cannot control everything and analyzing what is beyond your capabilities helps you make proper resolutions and cope better.
Then, you will find it's not exhausting to stick to your proper resolutions where you will get clear rewards, when the unconscious and conscious work together.
In today's fast-paced world, almost everyone wants to succeed as quickly as possible. But isn't always the best option. Hope you find your own pace and make proper resolutions.
