茶叶后来从中国流传到了全世界，有一首英国民谣中唱：“当时钟敲响四下时，世上的一切瞬间为茶而停。” When the clock strikes four, everything stops for tea. 可见，下午茶在英国人心中的重要地位。而英式下午茶这个传统的起源，最早要追溯到19世纪初，是一种上流社会的社交活动。再后来，一般的平民也开始喝下午茶，利用下午茶的时候与朋友小聚，或和家人聊天。正因为老百姓也加入了下午茶的队伍，所以下午茶有了 High Tea 和 Low Tea 之分。人们常常会错误的认为 High Tea 属于贵族， Low Tea 属于贫民，而其实恰恰相反。High Tea 是指中层或下层阶级在下午5点左右的下午茶，是在工作之间为了补充体力而享用的，所以也会提供很大量的点心。因为 High tea 是坐在高背椅、放在餐桌上吃的，所以才叫 High Tea。而 Low Tea 才是贵族们享用的，会坐在沙发上，在矮脚桌上吃，十分优雅。
