China appointed a new chief securities regulator. Liu Shiyu, chairman of Agricultural Bank of China and former vice-governor of the central bank, replaced Xiao Gang, who was sacked—apparently blamed for months of stockmarket turmoil. The CSI 300 index of large-cap shares has fallen by more than 40% from its peak last June.
