1900年米其林轮胎的创办人出版了一本供旅客在旅途中选择餐厅的指南《米其林指南》。内容为旅游的行程规划、景点推荐、道路导引等。每年对餐馆评定星级。

米其林餐厅评分系统共有三个等级：

1颗星：Very good Cooking 值得停车一尝的好餐厅（这样的叙述当然是因为米其林是做轮胎的）；

2颗星：Excellent Cooking一流的厨艺，提供极佳的食物和美酒搭配，值得绕道前往，但花费不低；

3颗星：exceptional cuisine出类拔萃的菜肴，worth the journey 值得专程前往，可以享用手艺超绝的美食、精选的上佳佐餐酒、零缺点的服务和极雅致的用餐环境，但是要花一大笔钱。
