A public inquiry in London reported that Alexander Litvinenko, an ex-KGB officer, was murdered in 2006 by two men working for Russia’s security service, “probably” on Vladimir Putin’s orders. Russia dismissed the report. Mr Litvinenko, a British citizen, helped British and Spanish intelligence investigate Kremlin links to organised crime; he was poisoned with polonium, administered in a cup of tea.
