Lightning McQueen poured on the speed as The King’s sleek tail fin (尾翼) flashed around the track with Chick right behind it. McQueen punched (按压) the gas and flew ahead of Chick. But Chick Hicks wasn’t about to lose this race to (输给) a rookie. Coming up fast, he slammed (猛撞) McQueen’s rear and spun (使旋转) him onto the infield (内场).
The crowd gasped (倒吸气) as McQueen whirled (打转) out of control (失去控制) on the grass.
McQueen recovered quickly, tearing up (毁坏) the field as he zipped (快速移动) back onto the track. But now he was in last place! He pushed hard to make up the time (弥补失去的时间).
Still, Chick wasn’t going to let McQueen close in on (逼近) him. He wasn’t taking any chances (冒任何险). “Dinoco is all mine!” he cried as he slammed into (猛烈撞击) the car beside him, sending it spinning (旋转) out of control. In an instant (立刻), other cars began to crash into a pileup (连环相撞). “Get through (穿过) that, McQueen!” With a confident sneer (嘲笑), the ruthless (冷酷的) race car headed into the pits (检修加油站) for fuel (燃料) and service.
McQueen tried to go around the wreckage (残骸), but it was impossible. With no other choice, he did the only thing he could think of: he went through it! Dodging (躲开) rubble (碎石) and smoke, McQueen moved spectacularly (令人惊叹地), gliding (掠过) between stopped vehicles and leapfrogging (跳跃) into the air over a pile of cars.
“McQueen made it through (渡过难关)!” shouted Chick’s crew chief (领队).
And McQueen didn’t stop. While everyone else headed into the pits, he kept rolling (开动) ... right into first place (第一名)!
“Woo-hoo!” McQueen cried (大喊).
“You know, the rookie just fired his crew chief,” Darrell announced. “That’s the third one this season!”
“Well, he says he likes working alone, Darrell!” Bob said.
Chick and The King bolted out of (冲出去) pit row (路) and didn’t waste any time in trying to catch up with McQueen. The laps (比赛的一圈) flew by, and it looked as if no one would beat him. Finally, McQueen headed into the pits for fuel. He couldn’t win the race on fumes (浓烟). “No, no, no—no tires (轮胎)!” he shouted as his crew tried to replace his worn (磨损的) tires. There wasn’t any time. “Just the gas!”
“Looks like it’s all gas ’n’ goes for McQueen today!” Darrell observed (评论) as he peered down (俯视) at pit row below him. “Now, normally (通常地) I’d say that’s a short-term (短期的) gain, long-term (长远的) loss, but it sure is working for him.”
The frenzied (疯狂的) crowd’s excitement grew as the contenders (竞争者) sped around (分散) the track. Then the white flag waved.
LAST LAP, read the stadium’s giant video monitor (视频监测器).
“Checkered flag (黑白方格旗，表示终点线),” McQueen said to himself, “here I come.”
“Oh, no,” Darrell cried as he watched the rookie lose speed. “McQueen has blown (爆炸) a tire!”
Chick and The King pounded ahead (轰鸣着前行), making up time with every second. But McQueen didn’t give up. He plunged (颠簸) forward...
He lost another tire!
“Come on!” Determined (决意的) to win, McQueen struggled forward, limping (跛行) on his rear wheel rims (轮毂).
“I don’t believe what I’m watching!” Darrell cried. “Lightning McQueen is a hundred feet (英尺) from his Piston Cup—”
“The King and Chick are coming on strong (强劲地)!” Bob shouted. “McQueen’s nearly there, but Chick and The King are almost caught up!”
McQueen dragged himself forward (拖拉着前进). He was inches (英寸) away from crossing (穿越) the finish line—and making history (创造历史). He could hear Chick and The King coming up behind him. In a last-ditch (最后一搏的) effort, McQueen took a giant leap (跳跃) and slid (滑行) forward. He even stuck out (伸出) his tongue to gain an extra inch.
“It’s too close to call!” Bob announced as he gaped at (目瞪口呆地看) the photo finish (终点的录像：竞赛成绩十分接近，根据终点线录像决定结果). “The most spectacular (壮观的), amazing, incomprehensible (费解的), unequivocally (明确地) unbelievable (难以置信的) ending in the history of the world, and we don’t even know who won!”
