Rapunzel looked into the horse’s big eyes and explained everything very sweetly to him. “Today is the biggest day of my life,” she said. Maximus nodded. “And the thing is, I want you not to get Flynn arrested (逮捕). Just for twenty-four hours, and then you can chase each other to your hearts’ content (随心所欲地). Okay?” Rapunzel paused. “And it’s also my birthday—just so you know.”
The horse whinnied (发出轻微的嘶声) and shook his big head as if to say everything was okay. But he was only doing this for Rapunzel.
Carefully, Rapunzel guided Maximus and Flynn together. She wanted them to shake hoof and hand in a truce (休战). Man and horse glared at each other angrily. They could not stand (忍受) each other.
The horse snorted (喷响鼻子) and finally raised his hoof. Flynn grudgingly (勉强地) reached out to shake it. He was only doing this for Rapunzel.
“Oof (哦呜)!” Flynn felt the hoof bypass (绕开) his hand and punch (猛击) him in the gut (肠子). So much for (…到此为止) starting a truce the nice way, Flynn thought.
It was the beginning of a perfect day, Rapunzel thought. And just when she was sure it couldn’t get any better (再好不过了), the bells of the kingdom began to ring in the distance.
Rapunzel darted (向前冲) to the crest (顶部) of a nearby hill, following the sound of the bells.
In front of her lay a kingdom that was more beautiful than anything she could ever have imagined. Bordered (环绕…) by a body of (一片) crystal-blue water, an elegant castle sparkled in the sun, flags flying from its many spires (塔尖). A village of lovely stone and wood cottages and small bridges nestled (坐落于) at its base.
Rapunzel turned and smiled at Flynn. She couldn’t wait. Today she would visit the kingdom—and later see those lights at last.
Before long (很快), Rapunzel and Flynn reached the kingdom’s gates. Pascal rode atop Maximus’s head, grasping (抓住) his ears and using them as reins (缰绳). The little chameleon felt as if it was the biggest day of his life, too! As they approached a bridge and a group of palace guards, Flynn worried that he might be recognized and arrested. But Maximus was determined to take care of everything.
Hoping Rapunzel would notice his cleverness, Maximus spied a boy up ahead (出现在前面) holding an armful of (抱满了) small kingdom flags. Rapunzel stared at the flags. There was something familiar about the purple background with the golden sun at its center. But she couldn’t quite figure out (搞明白) what it was that was tickling (此处指拨动) her memory.
Maximus went into action, hoisting (举起) the boy into Flynn’s arms. With a mass of (大量的) flags shielding (掩护) Flynn’s face, they easily walked past the guards. Maximus glanced proudly at (朝…看了一眼) Rapunzel.
“Good morning!” Rapunzel cheerfully greeted the guards.
And then, all at once (突然), Rapunzel was inside the village. She could hardly contain (克制) her excitement. People crowded (挤满) the streets, talking and shopping, hanging out (晾晒) their laundry (洗好的衣服) and busily doing other chores (家务活) and errands (差事). Everywhere she looked, she saw the bustle (繁忙) of life and laughter. It was absolutely enchanting (使人着迷的).
She could smell cakes and breads baking (烤). Up ahead, she saw beautiful fabrics (织物) and baskets hanging in market stalls (货摊).
Rapunzel hurried forward. She wanted to absorb (吸收) it all!
