The Good Dinosaur
Without Poppa, the family was sad. They struggled to keep up with (赶上) the farm work. “You need to rest, Momma,” said Arlo.
“I’m okay,” she replied. “If we don’t get this harvest (收割) in before snow hits, we won’t make it.”
“Don’t worry,” Arlo said. “I won’t let us starve (挨饿).”
At the silo, Arlo heard a rustle (沙沙声). It was the critter!
“You,” he cried. “This is all your fault!”
The critter grunted. Then it jumped onto Arlo’s head, slid down his back, and ran off. Arlo gave chase, but the critter startled (使吓一跳) him, sending them both into the river.
“Help!” Arlo cried. “Momma!”
The little dinosaur struggled to stay above water as the fast-moving river pulled him farther from home.
When Arlo finally washed up on the shore, he slowly got to his feet and called, “Momma!”
But there was no answer. Arlo was trapped between the river and a steep (陡峭的) wall. Then he heard the critter howl from the top. That critter was the one who had caused all of Arlo’s problems! Furious, Arlo tried to climb up to it.
When an exhausted (筋疲力尽的) Arlo finally reached the top, the critter was gone. Wilderness stretched (延伸) for miles . . . and Arlo couldn’t see Clawtooth Mountain.
As he watched the river below, he remembered his father’s words: Find the river, and you can find your way home.
Slowly, Arlo followed the river. Just as he started to feel hungry, he spied (发现) berries! But even by stretching his long neck, he couldn’t . . . quite . . . reach—“Aahhh!”
Arlo tumbled down onto the rocks! As he struggled to stand, he realized that his foot was stuck. When darkness fell, all Arlo could do was curl up and try to sleep.
Later, Arlo awoke to find his foot was free. The critter’s footprints were everywhere! Could the critter have released him?
Soon the rain started again. Arlo made himself a very small, very leaky shelter (避难所).
As the rain stopped and Arlo got settled, something moved in the bushes. It was coming right at him!
It was the critter! And the critter was really a human boy! The boy brought Arlo a lizard (蜥蜴) for breakfast, but Arlo only ate plants.
Next, the boy brought Arlo a dead bug (虫子). Yuck! Arlo pushed it away.
Finally, the boy offered him fresh berries. Arlo gobbled (狼吞虎咽地吃) them down and asked for more.
The boy led the dinosaur to the berry tree. When Arlo reached for the fruit, a poisonous (有毒的) snake prepared to (准备) attack him!
Terrified, Arlo scrambled (快速爬行) away. But the boy jumped in front of Arlo, defending (保护) the frightened (受惊的) dinosaur. He growled and barked (大声吼叫) at the snake, driving it away.
Arlo couldn’t believe it. The boy had just saved his life!
