在老舍的笔下，北京的春节跃然纸上，热闹非凡。而我们潮汕的除夕，一点伍仿也不亚于北京的春节。
除夕从腊月十五就开始了。在这一天，家家户户都在忙着大扫除，用物和被帐都要清洗干净，称为“采囤”。除夕前一两天，家家户户都在制作各形各式的粿品，以备过年用。
除夕一到，就相当于迎来了一个高潮。除夕这一天除了要祭祀祖先外，还要祭神。例如，在这一天，许多人家都将，米缸倒满米，供上两个大柑橘，这就是拜米罐。
拜过神后，就该到男人们忙碌了。每当这个时侯，男人们都动手把大门、厅门、房门的旧春联撕下来，糊上胶水，轻手轻脚地贴上新春联。于是，家中门户，焕然一新。春联，在潮汕俗称门符。而贴春联也有学问。在潮汕春联中，常可见到单扇门儿或神龛上贴着斗大的一个“春”字。“春”字有两层意义：一是表示春回大地，万象更新，一派生机；二是巧借“春”与“存”潮音的相谐，表示年年有余的良好愿望。这与北方喜筵上吃鱼，谐音“余”有异曲同工之妙。
每逢除夕，家家户户除了贴春联外，还要贴“福”字。近年来才有人家学习北方把福倒贴过来。而“福”字倒贴的习俗，其中还蕴含着一个民间故事。据说有一年春节前夕，清朝恭亲王王府的大管家为讨主子欢心，按惯例写了几个斗大的“福”字，叫仆人贴在库房和王府大门上。有一个仆人因不识字，竟将大门上的“福”字倒贴了。恭亲王福晋看了十分气恼，欲鞭罚惩戒。幸好大管家是个能说善辩之人，他见事不妙，怕牵涉到自己，慌忙跪在主子面前说：“奴才常听人说，恭亲王寿高福大造化大，如今大福真的到（倒）了，此乃吉祥之兆。”恭亲王一腔察纤听，也合情合理，心想，怪不得过往行人都说恭亲王府福到（倒）了，遂赏管家和仆人各五十两银子。自此，倒贴“福”字的习俗从王府传到民间。潮语“倒”与“到”并不谐音，故潮汕地区以往无倒贴“福”字习俗，是改革开放后之后从北方引入的。
忙完了该忙的习俗，一家人围着桌子吃起了团圆饭。吃团圆饭时要说吉没迹利话，当家的人要祝长辈身体健康长寿。在吃团圆饭之时，如果小孩子不慎将盘碗掉落地，大人们会接上说声“缶开嘴，大富贵”之类的吉利语。
吃团圆饭的别称也叫围炉，这不正反映了中华民族渴望团圆，渴望幸福的民俗文化和难以分散的凝聚力吗？
围炉过后，大人给小孩发压岁钱。随后，一家人团聚在灯前炉旁，看着联欢晚会，一直到十二点。这也叫守岁。
