Today, we will cover the basics of a good English or international resume. Many foreign firms or multinational corporations in China expect a concise resume with a tidy layout. Here are some of our top tips for improving your resume for international standards.

First, make sure your resume is no longer than a page and a half. If you do not have much work experience or history, it will be easy to keep it to one page. Most recruiters don’t have time to read over CVs that span across multiple pages. What recruiters are most interested in is your work history, education history and any skills that would make you unique. Keep your resume concise and to the point as most recruiters spend an average of 8 seconds glancing over your CV before moving onto the next candidate.

Second, make sure your resume is relevant and targeting the specific role you’re applying for. Do not include your irrelevant work history. Recruiters are only interested in work history if it is relevant to the position. For example, if you’re currently applying for a finance analyst role at an investment bank, there is no need to include your work history as a customer service associate at a retail store. If you do not have much work experience and you are worried about cutting any previous work experience out, try and include the most relevant information about yourself, such as specific courses or activities you were involved in at university that apply to the role.

Third, include and integrate words from the specific job listing. If the role requires a team player, make sure to give some sort of indication through your resume that you work well within a team or group. If the recruiter is looking for a specific technical skill that you possess, make sure that it stands out on your CV. For larger companies, many resumes are screened electronically first, filtering out any irrelevant CVs that do not match the requirements. Make sure your resume gives an accurate picture of exactly how perfect you are for each position you apply for.

Lastly, do not just list your work and education history. Recruiters and HR managers want to know how you did in your previous role, or how you performed at university. Under each heading, you must highlight your achievements within that particular position as a staff member or a student. Give numerical values to your achievements at work, for example: Handled 30 different accounts simultaneously and brought in 15 new clients in 6 months. These numbers give an accurate measure of your performance when handling responsibilities.
